BROKEN MIND
by Rebecca Hunter

There was a boy with a broken leg. The doctors tried to fix it, but didn't do a very good job. So he limped a bit. You wouldn't notice it right away, but if you walked any distance with him, you couldn't miss it. It didn't slow him down much, just tilted his gait a little. On rainy days, or especially cold days, and sometimes for no particular reason, it really hurt and he could barely walk at all. He tried all sorts of crutches and soaking and pain relievers, but nothing seemed to make it better. As he grew older, he came to believe he would never walk freely. That there was some reason he had to limp, maybe because he was a bad person.

Friends told him he should see a specialist - they could try to re-break it or operate and fix it. But he didn't have any insurance, so he stored those comments away with his dreams of the future. And he didn't really believe he'd ever be better. Then he met a girl. She was a very special girl. He told her right away about his limp, but she didn't go away. She liked him. He told her funny stories and made her feel smart and pretty. He told her there would be times he couldn't walk. She said she'd sit with him. He said he couldn't dance some days. She said she didn't mind. He said she should go get a guy with two good legs - she'd be happy then. She said she was happy now, and didn't want some two legged jerk. He said people make fun of him when he limps. She frowned at those people, but smiled for him.

She walked with him, on good days and bad days. She believed he was a good person, and almost made him believe it, too. She said she would help him find the right doctor, and hold his hand if they had to hurt him to make it better. She told him she wanted him not to hurt anymore, but if they couldn't fix it, she would still like him. She wanted to fix the leg herself, but knew she just wasn't trained to do it.

He wasn't sure who he would be if he didn't limp anymore, but he was very tempted to trust her. But he had trusted before, and the people had walked on without him. So he was very frightened. Especially when he couldn't walk - it seemed like he might never get up again. But he always did. With her, he could even skip some days!

So he kept walking with her, and talking with her, and one day, he realized he would take the chance. So he took her hand, and looked deep into her eyes, and said, "I don't ever wanna let go." And she smiled.
